In a world where international partnerships often revolve around trade deals and diplomatic agreements, a remarkable collaboration between Ohio and Ghana is proving that real impact happens at the grassroots level. From Columbus to Jirapa, a growing network of non-profits, educators, and cultural exchange programs is transforming lives—one initiative at a time.
The latest testament to this deepening connection is the Charity Watch Foundation (CHAWAF), a Columbus-based organization that recently donated essential supplies to St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Jirapa, Ghana. This act of kindness not only provides much-needed relief to vulnerable children but also highlights how the Ohio-Ghana relationship extends far beyond politics—into education, culture, and humanitarian aid.Ohio’s Generosity Reaches Jirapa’s Orphans
On January 20, 2025, CHAWAF delivered GH₵12,000 worth of essential supplies to St. Joseph’s Orphanage. The donation included food staples, infant formula, and cleaning supplies—critical necessities for the 21 children housed at the orphanage, some as young as seven weeks old.
Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Edward I. Sumaila, a Ghanaian Ph.D. candidate in Ohio, emphasized the importance of sustained support for orphaned children in Ghana, particularly in underserved regions like the Upper West.
“We believe that real change begins with small, meaningful acts of kindness. This is just the beginning, and we hope more organizations will step up to support these children,” Sumaila stated.
Beyond Charity: The Columbus-Accra Sister City Partnership
This recent act of generosity is just one of many outcomes of the Columbus-Accra Sister City partnership, an agreement signed in 2015 to promote economic, cultural, and educational exchanges between the two cities.Through this initiative, Ohio specifically the City of Columbus has collaborated with Ghana on various projects, including agricultural development, education programs, and business investments. The Initiative for Food and Agricultural Transformation, for example, has facilitated the exchange of agricultural knowledge to boost food security in both regions.
